You win some, you lose some...

Mason decided that he wanted to play basketball this year. So we signed him up. He got drafted to the "Spurs" and they have only lost one game. Until today. Today they got slaughtered. 50 - 14 was the final score. But you know as I tell Mason it isn't about winning or losing it's about how you play the game or so I thought. I certainly wish some of the other parents had the same thing in mind.
I had some very interesting observations today. I was sitting behind two fathers. One of them I have seen at every game. His son is a great player and you can tell that he has had a lot of practice and guidance. The father will talk with his son during the breaks, give him pointers and tips, the usual pep talk. The kid is a very sweet kid, friendly, very down to earth.
Dad number two I have only seen one other time. Mom is usually at the game with about 4 little ones under 4. She is typically reading to pass the time, while said children are running around, screaming, falling off the bleaches, running on and off the court, etc. Kid number two also is a great player. However, he looks frazzled all the time, always is crying and upset. Usually fouls out before the end of the game. Dad number two proceeds to yell at his son the entire game, screaming out what to do and what he is doing wrong. During breaks he yells at his son the entire time telling him what he has done wrong and what he needs to do better.
It was just interesting to see the difference a parent can make in their child's attitude. After the game, boy number one was chatting along, talking with the other players, laughing and high fiving his buddies. Boy number two was crying, he stormed out of the gym, not talking or saying goodbye to anyone.
Now I am not saying that Mason wasn't upset. He was disappointed but it took all of five minutes to get over. Eric reminded him that they had beat this team the last time the played them. Mason was like " Oh yeah " and went about his day. I am so proud of Mason. Basketball is definitely not his game. But he gets out there gives it his all and despite of everything he has fun.
