My boss and I got in to a lengthy discussion today about the recent debate concerning giving potential employers your Facebook login and password. It is interesting to think about giving an current employer that information. However, he was shocked when I told him my opinion. I shared with him the fact that I would willingly hand over my password to both a potential or my current employers for one reason and one reason only. That I would never say or post anything on Facebook that I would say at work.
I think about all of the times I have seen things posted, where I have just wanted to shake people and go "REALLY???" think people. Way to much information, too personal, or a huge violation of someone's rights. The last one is what really bothers me. Especially for people who work in the Healthcare field. The one thing you do not do is go posting or talking about your patients or the people you support on your wall, not if you value your job.
So for me I think that employers should be able to see what kinds of things a potential employee posts, and should be able to see if an employee has violated HIPPA standards. Especially if an employee works in a field that could be a potential liability for their employer.
I know it is pretty crazy coming from me. However, I have seen one to many inappropriate comments about the people I support, nurses making cracks about their patients and the like, to not think at some point the little guy needs to be protected. Yes, we have our rights but maybe if people would learn to stop posting those "Funny, guess what happened to me at work today, complaining, bashing our job" type posts, this would not even be necessary. We can thank all those folks for that and as for me, my employer can have my password if they ask for it. I don't have anything to hide.
